Day 6 - Shap to Kirkby Stephen

Day 6 - Shap to Kirkby Stephen

20 miles
Start: 8:30am
Finish: 5:45pm

Stayed at Pennine View Campsite at Kirkby Stephen. Ate at the Mango House restaurant at Kirkby Stephen, where I had a superb curry (which made a nice change from pub food!)

Route: Shap, Oddendale, Westmorland Plateau, Sunbiggin Tarn, Smardale and Kirkby Stephen.

This was a long day on the legs, particularly following the long and tough day yesterday over Kidsty Pike. Mind you, the walking was pretty flat across the limestone plateau and there was much interest along the way including glacial erratic boulders, stone circles, beautiful flowers (orchids, bird's eye primrose etc), many different upland birds and the wonderful hidden valley of Smardale with its former railway viaduct. It was a joy to reach Kirkby Stephen, and the wonderfully flat campsite at Pennine View (although it's a 20 minute walk into town!); some of the campsites in the Lake District are certainly not flat!

I am starting to feel like I am getting somewhere now.... Robin Hood's Bay seemed so far away a few days ago, but tomorrow we head over the watershed into Yorkshire and RHB now seems much closer...
