Day 1 - St Bees to Ennerdale Bridge

Day One - St Bees to Ennerdale Bridge
15 miles
Start: 10:30am
Finish: 5:15pm

Camped in the beer garden of the Fox & Hounds at Ennerdale Bridge
Ate at the Shepherds Arms at Ennerdale Bridge (steak & ale pie)
Two small pebbles in my pocket from the beach at St Bees.

Route: St Bees, coastal path around St Bees Head (South Head & North Head), then inland to Sandwith (attractive village with green, seats and pub) then roads, tracks and fields to Moor Row (no facilities) and Cleator (high hopes after passing cricket match and then church, but village disappointment with closed shop). Beyond Cleator, the scenery improved with lovely far-reaching views from the hill of Dent (Isle of Man and sweep of Cumbrian Coast, then inland to the western Lakeland fells). Steep descent from Dent down to lovely valley of Nannycatch, then long road walk into Ennerdale (two pubs and The Gather community shop and cafe).

Looking forward to the mountains of Lakeland tomorrow....
